Bacardi Legacy - Northern European Finals
D-Day for all Northern European @bacardi.legacy finalists: hopeful bartenders from the UK, Holland, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Ireland, Germany and of course Belgium give it their all in front of various panels, judging their stage performance, the taste of their drink and the promotional campaign behind the drink.
Rob from @koksandtales (Hasselt) and Didier from @dogmacocktails (Antwerp) throw down the gauntlet for a spot in the Global Finals, which will take place next year, in Mexico City. This preliminary round takes place in Amsterdam, and the winners will be announced tomorrow evening.
Legacy contestants are faced with a steep challenge: their drink should be simple enough to make in any bar (so home-made infusions, bitters and syrups are not allowed), yet sophisticated enough to be liked around the world. The aim is to mix up a Bacardi beverage along the lines of a Mojito, a Daiquiri or a Cuba Libre - a drink with a unique taste, which is recognizable and timeless, so that people will still order it in ten years, in any bar around the world.
That’s the idea, at least. Modern classics don’t just pop out of thin air, but you can at least give it a go. And the great thing about Bacardi Legacy is that the contest creates just the right circumstances (a set of rules to abide by, a deadline which creates urgency, and a competition which drives creativity) to help make it happen.
Last year Belgium’s Great Hope @ranvanongevalle from @the_pharmacy_bar (Knokke) managed to win the entire thing (what a surreal and thoroughly enjoyable experience that was!). Let’s see how the Belgians fare this time round.
