When the ranger asked how long we'd been planning this, "like, is this a lifetime goal?" Niether of us knew what to say. Three weeks earlier I said I'd love to go camping with her and suggested the Eastern Sierra. The next morning she said, "Mt. Whitney is in the Eastern Sierra!" From that moment we were both psyched! When we picked up permits, I'm pretty sure we were judged as incompetent by the ranger, who told us to go hike to some nearby lakes... I guess the two of us come across as a bit different at the ranger station than we actually are. Long story short, the next morning we got up at 2:30 am and hiked to the Mt Whitney summit in 6 1/2 hours. 12-ish hrs and 22 miles later we got back to camp and celebrated by driving into town to grab a decent beer. The lessons are these: 1. Don't let a ranger fuck your day up; if you are prepared and capable, they don't know you! Do your thing! 2. If someone suggests an adventure, do it. 3. Don't drink your celebratory beer the night before you hike...driving into town after 22mi of hiking makes you want to fall asleep instead of celebrate!
Anyway! More to come from this week's adventures. Thanks @haley_brynn_ for one-upping me with this great hike! As always, it was a blast, and I'd say we killed it! Is ours a healthy approach? Not sure...but at least it's fun!
